Does a fruit smoothie count as a drink or food?

Category: Smoothie Q&A

I want to go on a fast (for spiritual purposes), but only refrain from food. I will continue to drink plenty of juice, tea, water, and possibly milk. So would a smoothie count as food or drink? Thanks in advance for answers! :)
Its only a one day fast and I have decided to refrain only from food.

I don’t think this would count. I think this is a good way to get your nutrients with out actually eating a meal.

    if it’s chunky, both.

I imagine it would probably count as a food, because it’s so thick. I’m not sure, though.

Fruit drink. Not food. If it doesn’t fill you up, it’s a drink.

A smoothie is a drink, but it can replace a meal. It still counts as a drink though. :)

    Good luck on your fasting.

if you are contemplating the smoothie is ok to take during fast that kind of speaks to the depth of how spiritual you are.

A smoothy is processed fruit and, usually, yogurt. You would count those calories as fruit and dairy. It would be a drink if you were ONLY extracting the juice from the fruit. But a smoothy is the actual fruit all ground up in a blender or food processor.

And, traditionally, a fast means no food OR drink, except MAYBE water because we all need at least some water. But most people who truly go on a fast, truly avoid all beverages and food.

it is dangerous to go on a fast, check with your docter before hand, and i beleive that they are drink, only cuz there is no chewing involved, but make sureyou take vitamins and stuff so that your body doesnt lack it while you fast. but go to a doctor first!

Well considering your other choices you are allowing yourself during your fast, I would consider your smoothie a drink.

i think when you fast your only supposed to stick to food and tea…if it’s for spiritual reasons, and sometimes, my mom would eat bread only, i meanlet’s face it, the human body isn’t set up to go completely without food now a days, even if it is for spiritual reasons, but she’d fast for three days at a time, so she’d have to at least have something, so she’d eat a slice of bread, i don’t fast because i don’t think it’s a good thing to do, but i can respect your religion or anyone’s for that matter and i respect that you do it and why you do it, all i have to say is be careful and good luck :-) and smoothies would count as food (they have fruit in it)

A fruit smoothie is fruit blended that’s like blending veggies and drinking them is it food or a drink? If you are going on a fast with no food and liquids only then fine. But you are getting too technical in that case juice is also a product of fruit – - if you don’t want any food products drink only water!!

    It’s a drink :)

If you don’t have to chew, it’s not a food.

generally smoothies are counted as a “meal replacement” so i would say it is a food, and not a drink. otherwise you could just blend up a sandwich and drink it… ewwww! good luck with the fast! be sure to take plenty of vitamins!

It is considered a drink if it is in liquid form. Be sure there are no chunks in the liquid, as this would disqualify the smoothie from being considered a drink.

I would consider a fruit smoothie as food. Of course, I would also consider the milk and juice to be food as well. All three contain calories and nutrients, thereby benefiting the body by doing more than simply supplying hydration.
